For centuries, cooks have realized that basic flavors have an inherent balance. For example, salt is used to enhance bitterness and sweetness, like in sweet & sour soup. Chinese cooking in antiquity had a sense of balancing xian, salty, with tian, sweet. Today, that same principle is applied in Reese's Cups, a spoonful of peanut butter on ice cream, and chocolate peanut butter pie.
Desserts abound which combine sweets and peanut butter-- PB cookies, fudge, pudding, peanut butter cheesecake, and peanut butter milkshakes.
